A Call for More Journalism

Local News is in Crisis

Community journalism has been gutted across the U.S. and throughout California, including here in Sonoma County. As a result, more and more communities are left underinformed, disconnected and vulnerable to misinformation. Press Onward Sonoma County wants to restore impactful local journalism in our community—using a nonprofit model that is proving hugely successful in communities throughout the country.

The State of Local Journalism

Corporate-owned news organizations are in decline. Since 2005, nearly 70% of U.S. journalism jobs have been eliminated, as more than 3,300 news outlets have closed and even more have been downsized to the point where they have become so-called ghost newspapers. Sonoma County has also experienced this downsizing. In the year since the sale of the Press Democrat to a New York hedge fund, its newsroom has shrunk by 23%. This means fewer journalists to cover the stories Sonoma County's nearly 500,000 residents care about—and fewer journalists to hold the region's elected officials and other leaders accountable. By hiring and supporting more journalists in the county, Press Onward will ensure more stories get told and additional lights are directed on power.

A Proven Model

Nonprofit digital news is independent, community-owned and free. And it is the only news model in the U.S. that is growing. More than 700 nonprofit newsrooms are now thriving across the country, roughly triple the number of a decade ago. Communities have shown they will support trustworthy, independent reporting at the local level.

Local, Local, Local

Press Onward will bring this proven nonprofit digital news model to Sonoma County, re-focusing the lens of local journalism where it belongs: On our neighborhoods, our elected officials, our residents, our lives. Free, with no paywalls.

02

Our Values

Public Service

We know journalism is a public good that fosters community engagement, allows residents to make informed decisions, holds the powerful to account and bolsters civic life. Local journalism shines light on issues that matter and ensures every voice has a place in the public square.

Abundance Mentality

We know free, transparent, nonpartisan news and information are crucial for communities to thrive. Press Onward approaches journalism from an abundance mentality—one that seeks to be collaborative, additive and supplemental to the existing local news landscape.

Storytelling for Impact

We know the best journalism builds trust between media and its audience, where narratives can evoke emotion and inspire action to find solutions and drive community cohesiveness and development.

Community First

We know the corporate-news practice of putting profits before community is a flawed and outmoded business model. By placing local news first, Press Onward will fully engage with the community to celebrate the people, places and progress of Sonoma County.

Foster Young Talent

The Santa Rosa Now editorial team will be led by experienced editors and reporters working actively within the community, while furthering the skills of younger reporters as we develop the next generation of Sonoma County journalists.

We will partner with Santa Rosa Junior College’s award-winning Journalism Program and Arizona State’s renowned Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication to supply interns, freelancers and potential reporters. We will pair these students with seasoned reporters and editors to help develop the talent of aspiring journalists.

Our Goals

Santa Rosa Now

We plan to begin coverage with a local editorial team leading Santa Rosa Now (santarosanow.org), focused on the diverse neighborhoods of Santa Rosa, before eventually expanding to neighboring towns and cities.

Help Launch Santa Rosa Now

Our immediate goal is to raise $500,000 to launch Santa Rosa Now, a site under Press Onward's partner Newswell, a nonprofit based at Arizona State University that helps local news sites remain sustainable. These initial funds will allow us to hire our first journalists, secure our partnership with Newswell and begin to produce independent, free, community-focused journalism.

We offer thanks to those who have already generously lent their support to Press Onward. and join them by donating now.

About Newswell

Our planned partnership with Newswell will allow our local editorial team to focus solely on community journalism for Sonoma County. As an affiliate of Arizona State University, Newswell offers shared business services, innovative tools and diversified revenue strategies so its nonprofit newsroom partners can do what they do best: Report vital news and information in service of local communities.

Background

The Way Forward: Nonprofit News

The collapse of traditional, for-profit newspapers over the past two decades has been well-documented. Over the past 20 years, more than 3,300 news outlets have closed across the U.S., eliminating more than two-thirds of all journalism jobs. But while legacy outlets are shrinking, the nonprofit news model is expanding—rapidly. The Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) reports that its member newsrooms now employ an estimated 5,000 full-time-equivalent staff, an increase of 9% from 2024.

Why the Sale of the Press Democrat Matters

For more than a century, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat has served as the paper of record for Sonoma County. For most of its existence, it has operated under local ownership. But, with the May 2025 sale by its local investor group to New York hedge fund Alden Global Capital, the PD's future is uncertain.

Upon the purchase of other local news outlets across the state, Alden has employed a consistent playbook: significantly reduced newsroom staff, consolidated resources and brands, and turned away from local coverage toward regional and national news content produced by other publications. When Alden has previously acquired Bay Area publications within 40 miles of another, it has typically folded one publication into another—leading to concerns that it may do the same with the Press Democrat and the Marin Independent Journal, two North Bay daily print publications owned by Alden.

In the face of this reality, Press Onward will be there to ensure journalism is abundant and thriving in Sonoma County.
